Is It Too Late to Job Search in Q4?

Every October the same advice goes around: nobody hires in Q4, so wait until January. It is the most repeated piece of October job search advice, and it draws the wrong conclusion from something real. This short is the video version of Is It Too Late to Job-Search in Q4? You Have This Backwards.

Part of it is real. Something does slow down in the fourth quarter, and it is the process, not the hiring. Interview loops stretch because people on the panel are on leave. Offer approvals sit. A December start becomes a January one.

But those are two different claims. A slower process is true. Less hiring is a separate claim. A role approved in September is still approved in December, and the manager still needs it filled.

Meanwhile, everyone else heard the same advice. I don't have a number for how many people stop applying, but the openings don't stop with them. Fewer applicants for the same roles is less competition, not more.

And if you work retail or warehouse jobs, the fourth quarter is the peak, not the pause. In each of the last three years, retail added more than 400,000 jobs in the fourth quarter and lost more than half a million in the first. January is when those jobs go.

Everyone who took the advice applies in January. Apply now, ask about the start date early, and be in interviews before they arrive. JobIntel tells you how old a posting is, and ranks recent ones above the stale ones.
