The Job Scam That Pays You First

The standard advice about job scams is to never pay to get a job. The version that is growing fastest does not ask you to. It pays you first, which is precisely why the rule everyone was taught fails to catch it.

The job scam that works best is the one that sends you money before it takes any.

The Federal Trade Commission says job scam reports tripled between 2020 and 2024. Reported losses went from $90 million to $501 million. That is only what gets reported.

Here is the shape of it. You get an offer. A small payment arrives and it clears. Then you are asked to forward part of it, or to buy equipment from a named supplier. The money that cleared was never real, and by the time the bank reverses it, yours is gone.

The Better Business Bureau files these as task scams. Last year it logged around 680 of them, with a median loss of $2,300. Median, not average, so that is the typical one.

The tell is not bad grammar or a strange email address. Those are the old ones. The tell is money moving toward you before any work has happened, because no legitimate employer pays before you start.

There are three more versions of this scam, and each one wants something different. The full breakdown, including what each variant is actually after, is in the job scam that pays you first.
